It’s Good to be a Farmer Boy

I’d be lying to you if I said this agricultural life of ours was all sunshine and roses. It isn’t. I’ve talked about it many times before, but this life- and especially this season- can be really hard. We’re fresh off of harvest season and still transitioning back into things like co-parenting and weekends. It’s always an…interesting time. Transitions are hard, even when they’re good. We learn and relearn and learn this again, year after year. It’s humbling a good reminder of the grace that is needed in this life. For self and for others.

But I’d also be remiss to tell you that sometimes it wasn’t sunshine and roses because it definitely can be. Especially for two little boys who live and breathe farming.

The other night, fresh off our school shopping trip at the farm store and duded up in their John Deere duds, my little guys got to accompany their Dad across the street to the blueberry field. They were headed to turn off the irrigation gun, and since the sun was setting and they were looking so sharp, I grabbed my camera and tagged along.

There’s nothing particularly special about moments like this. All we really did was walk across the street. The boys didn’t do a whole lot other than watch their Dad at work. There weren’t any jobs to do, tractors to ride or heavy machinery to drool over. But we did it together. And this time of year, together is a big deal.

I think that’s one of the beautiful things about farming. It really makes us appreciate and savor our time together, even if it’s just an ordinary moment. Our boys don’t have grand expectations of constantly being catered to or entertained. They’re just happy to tag along. Especially when they’re dressed to kill in their green and gold.

At the top of the boys’ list of favorites from our book collection is the illustrated picture books adapted from the Little House on the Prairie series. There’s one book in particular, Winter on the Farm I believe, that goes through a typical day in Almanzo’s life. You follow along as he does his chores, eats his meals and spends time with his family. And at the very end of the book, there’s an illustration of him heading up the stairs to bed, followed by one of him tucked under a big patchwork quilt, with the caption, “It was good to be a farmer boy.”

It’s good to be a farmer boy, indeed.
